February 2026 - Historic Restoration
Our restoration team was back at historic Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Michigan, to finish the second part of a two part IMLS grant funded restoration & preservation project that began over a year ago in February 2025. Like most of the work we do, this project has a story:
Originally our studio was set up to rebuild six window areas in the …mansion’s two-story Gothic-inspired Ballroom.[1] The stained glass windows, almost a century old now, were original to the building, opened in 1929.[2] In early February 2025, we received news that two of the windows to be restored had been vandalized and demolished. Luckily, we had taken reference photos the week before, as we awaited the final go-ahead.
To begin the work, our team was supplied with two boxes, a bucket of glass, and what was left of the windows. Bill Matt, Executive Director of Meadow Brook Hall described it well for CBS Detroit: There were thousands of shards of glass. They had to painstakingly sort all the colors of glass that we were able to recover, and fill in a few more spots, but you can tell by the coloring it’s beautiful work, spot on with all the other windows, and they look amazing![3] Some of our team described it like working on a “big puzzle.” Little by little the windows were meticulously pieced together, replaced, and rebuilt based on our reference photos. The windows depict scenes of the arts, including Music, Literature and Entertainment, and Drama. The windows were created specifically for this room by J. Scott Williams.[1] The replacement glass is European hand blown (or full-antique.) For this project we utilized painted and leaded glass techniques. Our in-house team handled replicating and re-firing the painted figures featured in the windows and our friend and fellow artisan, Maria Orr from the American Glass Guild handled much of the intricate glass painting for the diamond glass pane window.
Restoration of windows in Frances’ bedroom suite posed a unique challenge as the room looks out from the second floor of a curved set of bay windows. To restore these windows our team had to rebuild on a curved form and install with scaffolding.
The second part of this project was focused on preservation. Our studio replaced the Ultra Violet (UV) blocking panels within the existing brass frames to protect the museum’s artifacts, tapestries, woodwork, and upholstery from damage. Our team added a patina finish to the metal frames, which mimics the natural aging process to create a weathered appearance, so the new frames blend in with Meadow Brook’s architecture.[2]
Go see and experience the work by visiting our friends at Meadow Brook Hall:
Meadow Brook Hall, a 95-year-old museum, cultural center, and event and wedding venue on the campus of Oakland University, is a National Historic Landmark. The Tudor revival-style estate was once the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, the widow of automotive pioneer John Dodge, and her second husband, Alfred Wilson. The 88,000-square-foot building has 110 rooms. Officials say it's the fourth-largest historic home in the country.[2]
